The Responsibilities of a Head Baseball Coach
-
Information
-
Whatever level you coach, your responsibility is to inform the players and families of the schedule, financial obligations and health risk from the beginning. Over the course of the season, keep your players apprised of the teams they will be facing in games. Inform them what you expect as far as personal health and uniform care. They are to know the expectations for games and practices, and the time requirements so they can plan ahead.
Instruction
-
Instruct your players in the rules and help them develop a love of the game. Your responsibility is to turn athletes into the best baseball players they have the potential to be. Correct their swing, stance, catching and throwing techniques. Help them understand muscle care and diet. Instruct them in exercises to enable their body to be in top shape for games.
Protection
-
Protect your players from other teams and from themselves. This responsibility is often burdensome and tedious because many athletes want to do their best and can push beyond their limits to hurt themselves. Help players know when their body needs to rest. Teach them techniques and cool downs that will prevent injury in the long run. Know the tendencies of players that your team may face. Encourage your players to seek medical care when necessary instead of pushing through the pain to add to an injury.
Character Building
-
Build character into your players. Teach them the art of winning and losing, of playing as a team and of working hard to fulfill a goal. Encourage them to spend time with their families as well as at the ballpark. Teach them balance and time management. Be a coach who can be respected and teach them to respect one another. This will not only enhance camaraderie but enhance skills on the field as they play as a team.
