How to Play Forward in Basketball

In today's basketball game, the job of a forward has been broken down into two categories: small forward and power forward. Each position has slightly different demands and skill sets. Usually, a power forward is bigger than a small forward, but the small forward handles the ball better.

Instructions

  1. Play Basketball as a Power Forward

    • 1

Run down the court and assume a position on the opposite side of the goal from the center on your team.

    • 2

Move continuously with your back to the basket to get open. If you can get open between the defender and the basket, do it and be ready to receive a pass.

    • 3

Pass the basketball back out to an open man when you are well defended.

    • 4

Take it to the hole by taking advantage of shooting the ball when you have an open shot from within 6 feet of the basket. Leave longer shots to other players.

    • 5

Box out the opposing defender by placing your body between the goal and the defender when a teammate takes a shot.

    • 6

Jump up to get a rebound when the ball bounces off the rim of the basket.

    • 7

Run back down the court to provide defense on the opposite side of the basket from the center.

    • 8

Take up space and spread your arms wide when the opposing team has the ball in your area (for zone defense) or the man you are guarding has the ball (in man-to-man defense).

    • 9

Block shots attempted by the opposing team's power forward and jump up for rebounds.

Play Basketball as a Small Forward

    • 10

Run down the court as fast as you can to catch a quick pass from the point guard to make an easy layup for 2 points.

    • 11

Keep moving on the outside areas of the floor and look for a pass from other players.

    • 12

Drive the ball inside for an easy layup if defenders are not in your way. If defenders step in front of you, go around them or pass the ball to an open teammate.

    • 13

Pass the ball to an open power forward or center to get 2 easy points.

    • 14

Take an open jump shot when defenders are busy with other players.

    • 15

Rush back to play defense on the outer edges in zone defense or with the man you are assigned to in man-to-man defense.
