How to Do Summer League Basketball for High School

High school basketball has turned into a year-round sport. Players all over the country participate in leagues and games with their high school teams throughout the summer months. Students who participate in a summer basketball league benefit from the extra games because they are able to stay in shape and work on refining their skills. Teams that do not participate in summer leagues often find themselves at a disadvantage when the regular season begins.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact other local high schools to see what their summer schedules are like. Athletic directors and coaches generally trade information about things such as scheduling. By finding out what other teams that you compete against are doing in the summer, you can be sure you are keeping up with the crowd. Ask what summer leagues they are participating in as well as any contact information for those leagues.

    • 2

Email or telephone the contact person for the summer league you want your team to join. Contact the person early so that he can reserve a spot for your team. In most cases, summer leagues play their games at a local high school gymnasium, but some leagues play on outdoor public courts as the weather allows. The contact person for a summer league will be the coach or athletic director at the host school or the recreation department for the local parks system.

    • 3

Pay the fee. Each team that is involved in a summer league pays an entry fee to cover the cost of officials, gym rental and usually a t-shirt. After paying the fee, you will receive the game schedule.

    • 4

Notify the team of the schedule. Give each player a copy of the schedule so that he can arrange rides to the gym. Schools do not provide transportation to basketball games during the summer.
