Transition Basketball Drills
-
3 on 2-2 on 1 Fast Break Drill
-
Line up players at one end of the court: one line of players under the basket and two additional lines on each sideline. Choose two other players to go to the opposite end of the court and act as defense. The three lead players in each line will sprint down the floor and attempt to score with as little passing as possible. Stress that in a situation where there are more offensive players than defensive players, the offense should always score. After the shot is taken, whether it is made or missed, the player who shot the ball sprints down to the other end of the court to play defense against the two who were just on defense for the 3 on 2. The two remaining players from the first offensive attempt stay and play defense against the next group of three from the lines.
Transition Drill
-
Line up nine players along one of the baselines. Five will be on offense and four will be on defense. The point guard playing defense starts at the half-court line. On your whistle, all nine players will sprint to the opposite basket with the ball to simulate a game situation. The defense will try to stop the offense from scoring and the defensive point guard will attack the ball, attempting to cause the ball handler to retreat or change direction. If the offense is able to score, they keep the ball and the drill starts over from that end of the floor.
Rush Drill
-
Organize three defensive players at the three-point line: one at the top of the key and the other two at the wings. All of the other players form three lines on the baseline and play offense. Position yourself behind the three defensive players and bounce the ball to one of the three offensive players at the front of each line. The offensive players will push the ball to the middle and begin a fast break drill similar to the 3 on 2-2 on 1 drill. Prior to running down to play defense, the defensive man at the top of the key must sprint to the baseline and touch it as his two teammates try to hold off the offense until he returns. The three offensive players become the three defensive players and the next three in line play offense.
The Get Down Drill
-
Position three players facing the basket as if they are playing offense. Shoot the ball, instructing one player to grab the rebound and the other two to fill the lanes and begin a fast break down the court. The rebounder should quickly throw an outlet pass to one of the other players, who then throws it immediately to the second player filling the lane. At this point, the final player to receive the ball should be on the other end of the court. The player who finishes with the ball passes back to the rebounder who has sprinted down the floor for a layup. This is a simple drill for beginners.
