Middle School Basketball Coaching Tips
-
Preparation
-
It is important to adapt the same basic philosophies as the high school head coach. For example, if the high school team uses a fast break offense, it is a good idea for the middle school to use a fast break offense. On defense, if the high school team plays all man-to-man, then the middle school team should play the same. Similar styles of play will ensure a smooth transition from middle school to high school basketball.
Sportsmanship
-
Middle school kids need impressed upon them that sportsmanship is central to their basketball careers. It is in middle school where kids should have perfected treating all teammates, opponents, coaches, referees, and spectators with respect. It is important to emphasize that poor sportsmanship will not be tolerated at the high school level by coaches, athletic directors and referees. Middle school players who excel in sportsmanship will benefit from it in high school.
Winning and Losing
-
Middle school coaches should begin emphasizing winning and losing more than a player's grade school coaches did. Winning and losing starts to become important at the high school level, so learning how to graciously win, and lose, in middle school is important. Winning and losing graciously involves always respecting your opponent regardless of circumstances. In addition, winning is considered a learned habit that comes with experience. In late-game situations when the score is close, it is important to know what you are doing. Having experience winning close games gives you the confidence that you need in order to be successful at the next level of play.
