1
Instruct your players on their position. In the 1-2-2 zone defense, the first position is the player at the top of the key. The second and third positions are players at the top edges of the lane, and the fourth and fifth positions are players who occupy the bottom corners of the lane closest to the basket.

2
Teach each position's responsibility. While there is less overall movement than with a man-to-man defense, every player has an area of the court they are responsible for. The first position guards the offense's point guard, or primary ball handler. He also can move over for trapping when the ball is passed. The second and third positions cover the wings and perimeter, and the fourth and fifth positions cover the basket and the baseline .

No defense is perfect, and the 1-2-2 zone is no exception. Its main fundamental soft spot is that the lane is vulnerable to a particularly fast, slashing offensive player. The corners can also be a weakness, but with the right personnel it is usually a manageable situation. If your players know how to compensate for the zone's flaws, then it will remain effective defense for your team.

4
Practice it over and over. After the verbal explanations and slow-motion demonstrations of its basic fundamentals, repetition is the key for your players' mastery of the 1-2-2 zone defense. Show your players different types of offenses and how they would need to adjust in the scheme. Ultimately, they need to be able to do it without much thought for it to be effective in a live, game-time scenario.
