How to Break the 2-3 Zone

When zone defenses were made legal, allowing teams to run sets other than man-to-man coverage, it provided a new challenge for offenses. The 2-3 zone places two players up top, and three closer to the baseline, and rather than each player guarding a man, the defenders each look to cover their side of the court and prevent the offense from getting inside. While the 2-3 zone is an effective defense, with the right tactics you can break it down and score points.

Instructions

  1. Basics of Beating the Zone

    • 1

Pass the ball frequently. The key to breaking down a zone is getting the defensive players to lose their shape, and forcing them to constantly move increases the likelihood that someone moves incorrectly and opens up a scoring opportunity.

    • 2

Avoid using the dribble unless the opportunity to split the defense is available.

    • 3

Move without the ball in an attempt to free up a lane to receive the ball or to cut to the basket for a layup.

    • 4

Hustle to gather offensive rebounds. As the zone does not leave a defender between every offensive player and the hoop the way man-to-man does, it provides less of an advantage for the defense for boxing out.

    Positional Roles

    • 5

Move along the baseline while the ball is on the perimeter, or move into the key to accept a dump-off pass when the ball is in the high post, when playing in the low post position.

    • 6

Always face the ball when playing in the high post, moving around the top of the key to provide the wing players and point guard with a passing option inside.

    • 7

Look to penetrate if given a lane to the basket, or to settle in a position to get a perimeter shot off when playing on the wing.

    • 8

Keep the ball moving, and look to split the top of the zone with passes or the dribble in order to get the zone moving and open up lanes.
