Football Workout Drills
-
Bear Crawl
-
A bear crawl is done by using your hands and feet to walk at the same time. Instruct your team to make rows of 10. Tell each row to bear crawl five yards and then stand up into a football position at the sound of your whistle. Keep doing this until all the players in each row have bear crawled 50 yards.
Balancing Drill
-
Line your players up across from each other with their hands on the opposing players shoulder pads. Instruct the defensive player to try and get the other player to lose their balance by pulling, pushing and tugging them on the sound of your whistle. This forces the offensive player to take a wide stance and shuffle his feet to keep his balance.
Beat Your Man
-
Put cones on both sides of your players at a distance of approximately 6 feet apart. While standing behind a defensive player, the coach instructs the offensive blocker on which direction he wants him to take the defender. Let them know they have to stay within the two cones.
Knee Highs
-
The "knee high" drill teaches players how to run with high knees in order to escape tackles. To run this drill place five practice bags 5 feet apart in a row. Instruct an offensive player to run at top speed into each bag while holding a football. Make sure the ball is carried properly for the duration of the drill.
