How to Execute a Handoff in Football
Instructions

-
1
Get into position. The quarterback takes the snap from center and starts to drop back with short, quick steps. The number of steps depends on the play call. While this is happening, the running backs starts coming forward.
-
2
Pivot for the play. Normally after about three steps, the quarterback will make a quick pivot to either the left or right.
-
3
Keep your eyes on the ball. The running back follows that pivot and looks for the quarterback holding out the ball, which should be about waist high.
-
4
Hold onto the ball. The quarterback needs to start moving backward with a firm grip on the ball.
-
5
Get your arms ready. The running back forms a football-shaped formation with his arms. Take the left arm and fold it over the right. The left hand should be positioned around the right bicep, and the right hand should be near the left elbow.
-
6
Grab the ball. The running back takes the ball in his arms just as the quarterback slides his hand out and keeps running backward to sell the play. The coach on the sidelines blows a sigh of relief.
