How to Coach Bucket and Zone Offensive Line Steps in Football

When it comes to coaching offensive line in football, foot work is very important. Without balance, the defense will roll right over your team and make the quarter-back very vulnerable. Not to mention that you'll have no running game. Here's how to coach bucket and zone offensive line steps in football for your team.

Instructions

    • 1

Instruct the players to line up on the offensive line as they normally would across from the defense.

    • 2

Tell the players which stance they will be assuming. This will be either a left-handed or right-handed stance. This is imperative as the footwork aligns with the chosen hand.

    • 3

Simulate the ball snapping. You may clap your hands, blow a whistle or just yell out a count. Just so long as the players know the exact timing of the snap, so they can work off it.

    • 4

Step with the same foot as the hand that is on the ground. So if your players are in a left-handed stance, then they will step with their left. If they are in a right-handed stance it will be the opposite.

    • 5

Follow through with the other leg for balance. This leg does not go in front of your other foot (as if you were walking) but to the side. This is the "landmark."

    • 6

Punch the other player in their sternum. When you coach, don't really tell players to punch the defense. That's simply the football terminology for jamming both hands up against the defense's pads.
