The 4 Whistle Drill

The 4 Whistle Drill shows the players 4 different collective movements and can be adjusted any way the coach wants. This drill is great for more mature players but good for young players as they can benefit from being introduced to "connecting" soccer.

One whistle means one movement.

Two whistles means something similar but with an added twist

Three whistles something else...etc.

I suppose you could have a "Ten whistle drill" but the coach might run out of puff.

There is no opposition in the 4 whistle drill...the coach is simply choreographing movement and connections between players - overlaps, driven balls, moving through the thirds of the field etc.

For younger players, this drill can be done by passing the ball by hand. In actual fact many of my choreographed exercises begin by passing the ball by hand....giving the players a feel for what they are about to do with their feet.

CB – 5

CM – 4

RW – 7

LW – 11

CF - 9

The 4 Whistle Drill

Notes

GK – Goalie. RB – Right back. RW – right wing. CMF – Central midfielder. CF – Center forwards.

Coach has whistle and blows whistle indicating which pattern to run.

Same thing can be done on left side except, when ball goes from CB to CMF the CMF spins with outside of foot and passes to left back.

Angled passes and angled run encouraged. Try and cut straight passes out of the sequences.
