4 Ways to Improve at Soccer, Off the Field

As a dedicated athlete, it's important that you formulate your lifestyle to help you perform your best on the field. Your body, lifestyle and athletic performance are all connected, and it's important to lead a healthy and conscious lifestyle so you can be your best self for you and your team. Although your training within practices is very important, sometimes, the things you do in your free time can give you the edge you need to step up your game.

There are so many things you can do off the field that can improve your performance, and you can start right away. Although it may seem that your lifestyle habits and practices have nothing to do with your life as a soccer player, everything is connected, and the sooner you lean into that, the better you'll feel all around.

4 Ways to Improve at Soccer, Off the Field

1. Stay Hydrated All Day Long

Drinking water when you feel thirsty on the field or after a long practice is only the half of it. In order to obtain the full benefits of drinking water, you should be drinking water all throughout the day so when you show up to practice, you're already hydrated and energized, rather than playing catch up after getting thirsty through your strenuous exercise and dedication on the field.

You can drink more water leading up to your practices, ideally drinking about 20 ounces at least two hours before you start. How much water you need will be different from person to person, but paying attention and learning what your body needs is a good first step in feeling rejuvenated and hydrated throughout your practices and your days.

2. Eat a Healthy Diet

Even with all the training in the world, nothing can compare to the overall wellness that comes from mixing a healthy diet with your rigorous athletic schedule. Food is the fuel your body runs on, and without the right fuel you can become tired, sluggish and not reach your full potential of strength and performance. It's important to eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, healthy grains and lean proteins.

Each person is different, and no one diet works for everyone, but it is important to make sure you're eating enough calories each day, finding hydrating and vitamin rich foods and eating enough carbohydrates to sustain your energy levels, especially before important games.

3. Keep Your Mind Sharp

You don't need to stop thinking about the game when you leave the field. In fact, mental training can take you to the next level as a soccer player, as soccer is a game of skill and strategy. Studying techniques and going over important takeaways from your practices can keep you sharp and prepared by keeping your mind engaged with the game, not just the body.

Studies show that even recalling tactics and going over plays can keep you alert and on your toes as you go through your training. Practice isn't just physical — mental training can be just as important in keeping you on your game.

Working on other pieces of the mental game are important, too. Improving things like confidence, visualization and emotional well being can all boost your performance on the field. Plus, they're good for your life overall.

4. Rest and Restore

No matter how strong your power, you need rest and recovery just like every other human being in the world. When you're training hard, it can benefit you much more than you realize to take a rest day to allow your muscles — and mind — to decompress and conserve your energy. If you can't always take a rest day, engaging in resting behaviors can be effective, too. Applying heat to your muscles, foam rolling, taking a hot bath and doing light stretches can be great additions to your downtime.

It's also wildly important to get enough sleep each night. This is important for everyone, but especially for athletes. You rely on the energy, muscle repair and mental clarity that comes from a sufficient sleep schedule, all of which can help you exponentially on the field. An average adult needs at least seven hours of sleep each night, which you should strive for in order to remain at the top of your game.

Reaching Peak Performance

Reaching peak performance is about so much more than your training on the field. Your lifestyle off the field can give you an extra push to go above and beyond in your athletic performance. What habits do you plan to pick up to take your soccer skills to the next level?
