4 v 4 Transition Game

The following comes from Don Herlan (Smedley). Much more like this can be found from Smedley on his site at www.smedleyssoccersite.com.

Procedure:

Two teams play 4 v 4 on the small field, while the third team waits on the outside. A large goal is set up on one end line, and two smaller goals are set up on the other end line. When a goal is scored, the attacking team keeps possession and attacks in the opposite direction. The defending team leaves the field when a goal is scored, and the third team comes onto the field.

Coaching Points:

  1. Concentration – No “switching off” during play. Out think your opponents and react first.
  2. Decision Making – Anticipate changes of possession and direction and move early.
  3. Possession – Make intelligent decisions as to when to take defenders on 1 v 1.

Progressions/Regressions:

Progression 1 – Add a goalkeeper on one or both ends of the field.

Regression 1 – The players on the outside are attackers, but they are only allowed one touch.
