Characteristics of a Bad Coach
-
Lack of Knowledge
-
It is hard for a coach to succeed in any sport without an in-depth knowledge of the sport itself. Knowing what to do in certain situations and teaching players the correct techniques is an integral part of coaching, and it is something that people without previous experience in the sport will not be able to do effectively. Players are also more likely to trust coaches that have a better knowledge of the sport.
Poor Communication
-
Being able to communicate effectively with players is an important part of coaching. A bad coach often refuses to listen to his players and is unable to get his ideas across to them. Bad coaches don't take suggestions from other members of the team and only do things their way. When a player performs badly, a coach that constantly yells at the individual will often just lower the player's confidence even more. Instead, the coach should be willing to find out why the player is under-performing and help him regain his confidence rather than just shouting abuse.
Lack of Commitment
-
A coach must be as committed to the team as the players are. A good coach is able to motivate his players to perform at the best of their abilities, while a bad coach simply goes through the motions. A bad coach is one who is disinterested and unprofessional. Coaches who arrive late, frequently cancel practices and appear unprepared or distracted are generally ones who lack commitment.
Focuses on Certain Individuals
-
A bad coach often focuses on a few individuals rather than the entire team. A bad coach gives preferential treatment to certain players, which can often upset team chemistry. Winning isn't everything, and a coach should be willing to let everyone have an opportunity to play. Coaches should aim to help each member of the team improve, instead of focusing on the specific needs of a few players.
