Reasons Why Kids Drop Out of Sports
-
Not Enough Activity
-
While sports are, by their very nature, action-filled, some athletes elect to drop out of organized sports because they don't feel that enough of their time is spent actually moving about and engaging in their sport of choice. In organized sports, participants are often required to wait patiently or listen to instruction to learn the rules of the game. For some students, these periods of inactivity prove too much and they ultimately decide to stop participating.
Too Much Pressure
-
At some schools, sports programs are all about having good-natured and physically-beneficial fun, while at others there is a major emphasis on winning. Students who feel an excessive amount of pressure from their coaches, or even their own victory-loving parents, may elect to leave the sports program in an attempt to escape this potentially overwhelming pressure.
Not Enough Playing Time
-
While some student athletes see action in every game, others spend more of their time relaxing on the bench. These second- and third-string participants may become tired of failing to receive game time and, as a result, opt to exit the sport in favor of another activity.
Wants More Friend Time
-
Students who have friends outside of their sport may feel that the time associated with attending practices and games eats away at the time they can spend with these other acquaintances. Students may quit a sports team in order to spend time with friends in a less organized social setting.
Lack of Skill
-
Some players are blessed with natural skills, while others must work hard to develop athletic abilities and may still fail to reach a peak level of skill. Athletes who lack skills may become frustrated with their lack of talent or tired of putting in the effort they must dedicate to developing athletic ability. This frustration may lead some students to opt out of athletic participation altogether.
