How to Teach the Shot Put Throw With Pictures

Coaching the shot put is challenging for several reasons. The athlete may not understand the techniques and how to use his body to propel the shot. Another major hurdle is that the athlete cannot see his throwing form. By breaking down the shot put throw with pictures, the athlete gets a frame-by-frame analyses of the throw and, with the coach's assistance, he can make the needed adjustments. Taking pictures of your thrower won't make him a superstar, but it is a valuable tool in the process of perfecting his technique.

      Take video of a perfect shot put throw. This video can be from an athlete on your team, a coach or a professional athlete. Look for a thrower with the specific form you are trying to teach your athletes.

      Take video of the athlete you wish to train throwing the shot put. The video should clearly show all aspects of the throw. The angle of the video should be similar to the video of the perfect throw. With similar angles, the athlete can better see the differences between his throw and the correct form.

      Run both videos through a video editor and split each frame of the throw into pictures.

      Print the pictures on to two separate sheets of paper. One page shows the perfect throw. The other page shows the athlete in training's throw.

      Show the athlete both images side by side and analyze how his form differs from the form of the perfect throw.

      Repeat the process as the athlete progresses and compare his old throws with the perfect throw and his new throws.
