How to Play Netball With People Who Have a Disability

Netball is a fast paced sport similar to basketball. There are seven players on a team and each end of the court has a semicircle where shots on the goal can be taken. The goal is similar to a basketball hoop but without a backboard. Once a player catches a ball, they can only take two steps and can only hold onto it for three seconds. A defending player must be three feet away from the player holding the ball and only two positions on each team can shoot to score. With a few modifications to the rules and the equipment, Netball is a game that can be played by those with a disability.

Determine the ability of the disabled player. In order to modify the game, you must be aware of what a player is capable of doing. Once this is established, work to find a way to bring that ability into the game.

    • 2

Use a ball that contains a bell inside. This will allow those with visual impairments and spatial difficulties the ability to hear the ball in order to locate it.

    • 3

Use a foam ball and slow the pace of the game down. For many with a disability, a hard ball can be intimidating. A fast-paced game can lead to confusion, making it difficult to learn the basic rules. By using a softer ball and slowing the pace down, those with a disability can better learn and get accustomed to the game and are later able to progress to traditional play.

Assign player position based on ability. For example, a player in a wheelchair might be better fitted as a guard position rather than one trying to move all over and shoot the ball into the net.
