How Be a Good Athletics Coach
Instructions

-
1
Show your players you genuinely care about the success of the team. Prepare just as hard as you expect your players to prepare. Players will sense the level of effort their coach is putting forth and, in turn, base their own effort on that perception.
-
2
Demonstrate fundamentals of the game but stay hands-off during team drills. Watching for correct technique and observing weak spots in the team's dynamic is a task better performed from the sideline.
-
3
Create an environment in which team-building can occur. Although it's important to be likable to your players, a good athletics coach must also command respect from his players and opponent. Having too familiar a relationship with your players might lead to disrespect.
-
4
Stress discipline in all facets of the game. Help players reach their full potential by holding them to high standards and never selling short their abilities. Emphasize dedication, effort, and teamwork.
-
5
Stay familiar with the latest strategies and rule changes in your sport. Attend clinics and seminars on coaching strategy. Being up-to-date on theories and philosophy will help you better attack the opponent.
