Talk to a coach or experienced friends and family members about tips for better technique. Listen to what they have to say and practice the methods that they describe. Video examples of proper throwing techniques can also be used for instruction. They can be found at book stores, sporting goods stores and on the Internet.

Stretch before beginning to practice to keep your muscles healthy. Warm up when beginning, which means throwing shorter distances for at least 10 to 20 minutes.

    • 3

Stand with the leg on the side of your throwing arm planted and step your other leg forward. When you step, rotate the shoulder of your throwing arm before releasing the ball.

    • 4

Set up a target to improve your aim when throwing. You can use a tire or a piece of cardboard attached to a tree. There are also professional products which measure velocity and aim when a ball is thrown.

    • 5

Practice throwing with others. Try to gradually increase the distance that you throw the ball and the speed at which it is thrown. Have your partner throw the ball high, low and off center so you can practice catching it and getting rid of it quickly.

Practice keeping your wrist cocked when throwing a football and allowing the elbow to lead the throw. The wrist should not change angles when the ball is being released. Use proper follow-through, which means keeping your eye on the target at all times and moving your throwing arm and side of your body forward while you throw.
