Facts About BMX Bikes

BMX stands for Bicycle Motocross and is known as an extreme sport. Tracks for racing include difficult obstacles with many racers vying for first place. Each road surface has a BMX bike that is best suited to tackle that particular type of terrain.
  1. History

    • BMX bikes first broke on to the scene in the early sixties. Schwinn was accredited for making the first BMX style bike which was called a Sting Ray. The first BMX race took place in California in 1971.

    Function

    • BMX bikes are used on dirt tracks for racing, they are used in extreme games on ramps, and half pipes and they are also just used for recreational purposes.

    Types

    • There are 3 basic types of BMX bikes. They are jump/dirt bikes, racing bikes and freestyle/stunt bikes.

    Racing

    • Racing bikes are lightweight, durable, they have knobby tires and are made to get around a track in a hurry. They can also be used for off road riding as well.

    Freestyle

    • A freestyle bike is used for performing tricks and stunts. It comes with axle pegs for doing tricks, a heavy duty frame and tires that are designed for pavement. They are mostly used in skate parks.

    Jumpers

    • Jumper bikes are a crossbreed of freestyle and racing bikes. They have a solid frame, knobby tires and they are generally used for trail riding and jumping in back yards.

    Size

    • BMX bikes are usually made out of aluminum or a substance called chromoly which is heavier and a bit more cheaper. Bike sizes are mini for riders 4-to-6, junior for riders 6-to-9, expert for riders 9-to-13 and pro for riders 13 and older.
