About BMX Bike Helmets
-
Types
-
There are two types of helmets specified for BMX biking: Full Face and Open Face. Full Face helmets are recommended by the American Bicycle Association for racing or aggressive downhill biking. Similar in appearance to motorcycle helmets, these protect the entire head, leaving a large gap for the eyes. Alternately, open Face helmets, which are recommended for Freestyle BMX tricks, protect the top and back of the head without obstructing the face.
Function
-
Because of the dangers of both freestyle BMX and BMX racing, helmets are required to protect the wearer from head injury in the event of a crash. According the the Brain Injury Association, wearing a helmet reduces the chance of a head injury by 85 percent and the chance of brain injury by 88 percent.
Size
-
Choosing the correct helmet size is essential for purchasing the most protective helmet possible. When taking head measurements, be sure to measure around the largest diameter of the head, including the tips of the ears so that the helmet will fit properly. A helmet that is too small won't fit, but a helmet that is too large may slide and not be as protective in the event of an accident.
Different helmet brands have differing measurements for helmet sizes X-Small through X-Large. Double check the measurement sizing when switching helmet brands to ensure a perfect fit.
Considerations
-
When choosing a BMX helmet, prices can vary from approximately $30 to well over $100, so be prepared to purchase a helmet that is cost effective for the wearers skill level as well as style of biking. Helmets should also be researched to be sure that they meet certain safety standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Warning
-
Helmets are not the only safety item for BMX biking. For Freestyle BMX, riders should also wear upper and lower body armor, elbow and knee shields, wrist guards and other safety apparel.
