How to Work on a Dirt Bike Motor

On a dirt bike motor, many problems may arise. If the problems are not fixed, the motor will get so bad that it will stop working altogether. Dirt bike motor builders make rebuild kits that make it easier to repair a motor. These kits come with all of the large parts that commonly fail on a dirt bike. This job takes more than a few hours, so take your time so that you do not mess up.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect all cables connecting the motor to the bike.

    • 2

Remove the motor's connectors from the dirt bike's frame using an adjustable wrench. Rest the motor on a workbench. Make sure that you keep it upright so that no oil leaks out anywhere. If you are having trouble moving the motor to the workbench, have someone help you lift it.

    • 3

Obtain a motor rebuild kit that is designed for your motor. Just like cars and other motor-based vehicles, every motor is slightly different, so buy the correct rebuild kit.

    • 4

Dissemble the motor using the adjustable wrench and a screwdriver.

    • 5

Clean all parts of the motor that are not being replaced by the rebuild kit with engine cleaner and a washcloth.

    • 6

Reattach the motor parts using the cleaned used parts and parts from the rebuild kit. Most rebuild kits come with a new crankshaft, connecting rods and gasket kits. Follow the instructions that come with the rebuild kit to properly attach the new parts to the motor.

    • 7

Place the motor back on the bike and reattach the cables.
