How to Lift Kegs

For parties and large gatherings, beer kegs are a better bet than individual cans or bottles. Yet a keg can weigh up to 170 pounds, which certainly makes transporting it an issue. As is the case with lifting any heavy object, there are some tips to keep in mind. What's most important is that you avoid injury, so that you can enjoy yourself properly upon arrival.

Instructions

    • 1

Test the heaviness of the keg, by lifting an edge of it off the ground. This will let you know whether or not you need to ask a friend for assistance. Proceed only if you're sure that you can lift it on your own.

    • 2

Stand near the keg, so that your body is centered above it. Keep your feet shoulder width apart and plant them firmly.

    • 3

Bend at the knees, not the back, to get down into a squat position. Your back should be perfectly straight at this time.

    • 4

Place one hand on either side of the keg and get a firm hold. Typically, kegs have handles, so you'll want to use those for gripping.

Sometimes you need the help of a friend.

Lift the load by standing up straight, using the strength of your legs, rather than your back or your arms. Do this slowly, to keep the load steady and avoid injury. If you are using the help of another person, make sure the load is as close to you as possible, to keep it from feeling heavier than it is.
