How to Grind Pipe on Rail Welds

Grinding is a stunt that is performed in different extreme sports, including BMX riding and skateboarding. The rider performs this trick by sliding across the top of an obstacle with a portion of the riding equipment. Skateboarders grind piping and rail welds during free-style events and when skating around various areas in a community. These athletes complete a variety of tricks, optimizing their grinding skills on available pipes and rails.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a rail to complete the trick. Skate parks are built to suit riders and will have plenty of rails to ride. Public areas, such as library steps, may also have grinding rails; however, it may be illegal to ride those areas.

    • 2

Practice completing an "ollie," also known as a skateboard jump, from the ground to the height of the rail. You will need to jump from the ground with enough height to land on top of the rail.

    • 3

Back away from the rail to obtain enough distance to gain speed for the trick. Give yourself enough room to push off the ground three to four times before you have to ollie on to the rail.

    • 4

Skate toward the rail moving as fast as you can. Ollie from the ground to the rail and land the board on top of the rail. Slide down the rail while maintaining balance across the board. Slide down the rail and complete a small ollie off the board and land on the ground in front of the rail.
