How to Make a Longboard Out of a Wood Ski

Long boarding originated in Southern California in the early 1970's and was used by surfers to "surf the pavement" when there weren't any waves to ride in the ocean. Originally made out of an old wooden water ski with skateboard "trucks" attached, these boards allowed the rider to carve and steer down hills at tremendous speeds. Although long boards are now made out of fiberglass and plywood, you can still make a traditional longboard from only a few easily found items.

Things You'll Need

  • Wooden ski
  • Power saw
  • Power drill
  • Electric sander
  • Strip of grip tape as long as your board
  • Permanent marker
  • 2 longboard "trucks"
  • File

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all of the old components from the ski with your drill. Wooden skis, preferably water skis, can be found in pawn shops and second-hand stores.

    • 2

Draw the shape of a longboard onto the ski with your marker. Remember that longboards can be virtually any shape you desire so have fun with your design.

    • 3

Cut the shape of the board out with your saw.

    • 4

Sand the edges of the board with an electric sander; a traditional longboard has rounded edges.

    • 5

Turn the board onto its back and mark where the holes for the trucks will go with your marker. Remember that it is vitally important that the trucks are centered so use a straight edge to line the trucks up perfectly.

    • 6

Drill the holes through the board for the trucks. Remember to use a drill bit that is sized the same as the screws for the trucks to ensure a tight fit.

    • 7

Cover the top of the board with your strip of grip tape by removing the paper bottom and sticking the tape to the board. Use a file to file the overhanging edges off of the board.

    • 8

Attach the trucks and tighten the screws with your adjustable wrench.
