How to Jump a Wake Higher

Wakeboarders utilize a customized design of the skiing boat to perform tricks and maneuvers. Boats used for wakeboarding are often weighted down to create a large wake or wave as the vessel navigates across the lake. Much like skiers, wakeboarders hold on to a rope that is fastened onto the back of the boat. Wakeboarders use the wake as a ramp to jump above the water while performing spinning and flipping techniques. To jump the wake higher, professional wakeboarder Shaun Murray recommends holding on to the rope handle with both hands until your board leaves the wake.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide your feet into the boots of the wakeboard and tie the laces. Jump into the water and extend your legs in front of you. Grip the handle of the wakeboarding rope with both hands.

    • 2

Lean back as the wakeboarding boat progresses forward. Pull back on the rope handle to lift yourself out of the water. Rotate your shoulders to point the nose of the wakeboard toward the back of the boat.

    • 3

Lean onto the heel edge of the wakeboard to ride into calm water. Bend your knees to balance your wakeboarding stance. Lean onto the toe edge of the wakeboard to progress toward the inclined wake.

    • 4

Extend your legs as you reach the apex of the wake. Pull forward on the rope handle while jumping vertically. Lift your knees to maximize the airtime of your wakeboarding jump.

    • 5

Bend your knees as the wakeboard descends onto the opposing side of the wake. Practice these simple techniques to increase the height of your wakeboarding jump. Grab the edge of your wakeboard while airborne to add a variation to the maneuver.
