Kite Surfing in Singapore

Kite surfing has become an increasingly popular sport since it was introduced in Singapore in 2002. It's no surprise the sport has taken off, considering the country's warm waters and windy conditions.

  1. Learn to Kite Surf

    • Club Kite is one of the few places in Singapore where you can learn to kite surf. A two-day introductory course taught by certified instructors costs around $300. The lessons take place in Bintan, Indonesia, about an hour away by ferry. You'll receive all of the equipment, including the kite, board, helmet and life vest.

    Where to Kite Surf

    • There are several beaches around Singapore that allow kite surfing, including the East Coast Park, Changi Beach and Jurong Beach. The East Coast Park is popular with picknickers and campers on weekends, but is empty during the week. Jurong Beach is next to many of Singapore's oil refineries. The view isn't terribly nice, but not many people go there. Changi Beach is at the far end of the island near the airport. It's very quiet and there's lots of space for kite surfers to let loose.

    • There are many convenient destinations near Singapore for kite surfing. Desaru beach in Malaysia and in Bintan in Indonesia are an hour away by boat. You can also fly to Bali and Phuket, both popular kite surfing destinations approximately two hours away by air.

    When to Kite Surf

    • Although it is reasonably windy year-round, the best time to kite surf is during the two monsoon seasons. The NorthEast Monsoon occurs between December to March, while the SouthEast Monsoon occurs between June and September. The winds usually kick up in the afternoon after 1 p.m.
