Muscular Endurance Definition

Every year on January 1, numerous people make a New Years' Resolution to join a fitness club and start working out. Several different workout programs and methods are available to choose from but every program is trying to lead the individual to improved muscular endurance.
  1. Function

    • Muscular endurance is often defined as the ability perform a given task for a certain period of time. This allows an individual to repeat activity over and over again. For example, an individual's capacity to run on a treadmill at a given speed for a specific amount of time can determine muscular endurance.

    Identification

    • Many researchers identify muscular endurance by performing a series of tests with lab equipment measuring different variables. Without a lab, an individual can determine muscular endurance by recording performance on a specific exercise with a given weight and repeating the same movement several weeks later to identify changes and improvements.

    Misconceptions

    • Many people believe that improving muscular endurance can decrease overall strength. With the ability to perform more work over a period of time, an individual can work out harder and longer. As a result, as muscular endurance improves the overall ability to perform work over time increases, which relates to overall strength gains.

    Benefits

    • The level of muscular endurance allows an individual to perform more during the course of a day. Overall health is improved as the level of muscular endurance improves.

    Theories

    • Several supplement manufacturers produce products that claim to improve muscular endurance. Research the company and product(s) before committing to a purchase.
