How to Tie an Exercise Band to a Post

Exercise bands are a valuable type of fitness equipment due to their versatility and ability to help you stretch and strengthen your muscles. With many band exercises, you can hold both handles of the band or stand on a specific part of the band to create resistance, but for other exercises, you must tie one end of the band to a sturdy structure such as a post.

Check to see if one end of your exercise band is equipped with a carabiner. If the band has a carabiner, it becomes extremely simple to attach to a variety of structures, although you won't likely be able to attach it directly to a post. Instead, you can attach it to something connected to the post. For example, click the carabiner to a chain-link fence instead of the post that holds the fence. If you plan to use the exercise band frequently, consider buying a carabiner to clip to one handle.

Determine the height at which you wish to tie the exercise band to the post. The ideal height depends on your intended use of the band. For example, if you wish to use the band to stretch your shoulder, connect the band at shoulder height. For leg exercises that require you to wrap the band around your ankle, connect the band a few inches off the ground.

Tie one end of the exercise band to the post using a standard knot. Wrap the handle of the band around the post, pass the handle under the band and then over and through the loop, just as you would tie any standard knot. You don't have to tie a double knot, as the bulkiness of the handle helps keep the knot from coming undone during your exercise. A double knot, however, is suitable if you're concerned about your knot holding.
