Types of Adjustable Dumbbells

Dumbbells have come a long way since their initial development, from basic one-size, single-weight models to dynamic, adjustable-weight variations. Many weightlifters opt for adjustable-weight dumbbells due to the speed and efficiency with which they are able to change out the weight plates to accommodate their workout regimen. Having a basic understanding of the different adjustable dumbbells available for your workout sessions can help you decide which ones will best suit your exercise goals and provide the results you require.
  1. Spinlock

    • Spinlock adjustable dumbbells allow you to utilize a metal spinlock collar to hold the dumbbell weights in place. Once you've loaded your desired weight amount on the dumbbell handle, you spin a metal collar on each end of the bar to secure the plates. Although spinlock adjustable dumbbells allow for a quick way to change and secure dumbbell weights, the spinlock sometimes becomes loose after regular use and occasionally needs re-tightening.

    Spring Clip

    • Spring clip adjustable dumbbells use a metal collar for holding the weight plate in place. The metal collar has squeezable handles that allow you to quickly put on or remove the collar for adding or removing weight plates. Spring clip adjustable dumbbells have a secure design and are able to handle higher amounts of weight plates without the spring clips becoming loose.

    Turn-Dial

    • Turn-dial dumbbells allow you to adjust the weight amount of each dumbbell by turning a dial to your desired weight amount. The dumbbells sit on top of a metal housing with all the plates and the bar already loaded. Once you turn the dial to a specific weight amount, a pin draws in and out of the plates, allowing only the plates for your chosen weight amount to be selected. You are then able to lift the bar of the housing with only the selected weight plates engaged. To increase or decrease the weight amount, you place the bar back on the housing and turn the dial again to select or deselect weight amounts.

    Sport Block

    • Sport block dumbbells offer the ability to change weight plates much like you would with weight-plate machines in a gym. To adjust the weight of the dumbbell, you pull a magnetized pin out and place it in another location, selecting your desired weight amount. Sport block adjustable dumbbells allow you to hold the dumbbell at different points for your exercise, adding dynamic and flexibility to their use.
