Does the 30-Day Ab Challenge Help Tone Your Stomach?
-
Ab Exercises Only
-
If the 30-day challenge you've chosen involves a daily dose of abdominal exercises only, you'll unlikely see a toned stomach at the end. The crunches and situps may strengthen your abdominal muscles, but they won't help you lose the layer of fat that lies over them. If you start out the program at a healthy weight with a low body fat percentage, you may see a slight difference in the shape of your abdominal muscles at the end of the 30 days. This will only occur if the challenge you do involves exercises such as front planks, side planks and rotation moves, because these target all of your abdominal muscles, rather than just the front sheath of your stomach.
Your Starting Place
-
If you start a 30-day abs challenge overweight, you're unlikely to lose enough weight in one month to reveal toned abs. A safe, sustainable rate of weight loss is 1 to 2 pounds per week. In 30 days, you can lose about 8 pounds at the most -- if you have an excess of 10, 20 or more pounds, you'll have to wait several months to lose enough weight.
Even if you do manage to lose excess weight in 30 days, it may take even more effort for your toned stomach to appear. Toned abs show at below 15 percent body fat for women and below 9 percent for men, explains fitness expert Tom Venuto. Unless you're starting out at low body-fat levels, it'll take longer than 30 days to achieve this goal. The American Council on Exercise says you can realistically expect to lose about 1 percent of fat per month.
Nutrition Counts
-
Crunching and twisting won't do you any good if your diet negates all that work. To lower your body fat levels, you must follow a clean diet consisting of mostly unprocessed foods, lots of fresh, watery vegetables, lean proteins and modest amounts of whole grains, nuts, seeds and fruit. You'll also have to keep your quantity of food in check. Too many calories, even from healthy sources, will prevent weight loss. Some 30-day challenges do provide nutritional support, which could kick start your progress toward achieving a toned stomach -- but probably won't give you the results you crave in 30 days.
Don't Forget Other Exercise
-
Most 30-day abs challenges focus on your abs and neglect to enforce regular cardio and total-body strength training as part of their regimen. To lose weight, and thus reveal a toned stomach, cardio exercise is essential in helping you burn calories and create a calorie deficit for weight loss. Strength training all of your major muscles, not just your abs, contributes to a leaner body that burns fat more efficiently. Total-body exercises, such as squats and deadlifts, are also phenomenal abdominal strengtheners that help you achieve a toned tummy over time.
