If you are just beginning to follow a consistent exercise program, you will require more rest between workouts. Your body must become acclimated to increased workloads before you add days to your weekly workout routine. Remember, more is not always better. Focus on proper form and safety before piling on additional workouts. As your body becomes more conditioned, you will be able to shorten the number of rest days between each workout.
Level of Soreness

No pain, no gain is not always a wise approach to take when considering your workouts. Training muscle groups too often, without allowing for recovery, will slow your progress and may even reverse already-achieved gains. Be mindful of your level of soreness before every workout. If your lower body is still stiff from a previous workout, consider training a different muscle group. A warm-up session of five to 10 minutes will help alleviate soreness and will get your body ready for more intense work.
Workout Split

A solid workout program is carefully designed to provide adequate rest and recovery time while also challenging each muscle group. Workout programs that neglect a specific muscle area, and overly emphasize training another, lack balance and may result in over-training or injury. Choose routines that include all major muscles. Allow 24 to 48 hours rest between your workouts. Training each muscle group once a week is optimal; however, programs will vary based on individual goals and fitness levels.

Your current health status plays a significant role in the amount of time needed for rest and recovery. Your doctor or health care professional can advise you how much rest you require between workouts. Recovering from an illness or dealing with a chronic condition will likely increase your rest days needed. Include active recovery days between workouts. Pick leisure walking, stretching or another type of low-intensity activity. This will also help prevent muscle soreness.
