How to Hang Up a Punchbag

Punching bags are a low-tech training device that have stood the test of time. They are good practice for amateur boxers, mixed-material arts fighters and professional boxers. They also are a way for the average person to get a fitness workout. Punching bags can be installed with much less work than those mutli-gadget fitness systems you see advertised in infomercials. However, an improperly hung bag can rip through your ceiling.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your workout spot. Pick an area that gives you enough room to move your arms without obstruction and to practice your footwork. Ideally, you'd like room to work around all sides of the bag.

    • 2

Visit the sports store to look at different sizes, weights and fills. Bag filling choices include hard fill, foam liners and shredded fiber. Punch the bags and try them out. Sporting goods store often have samples hanging up for you to test. Purchase the one that feels right for you.

    • 3

Locate a support beam in the ceiling of your workout area. Drill holes above where the bag will hang.

    • 4

Fish the eye bolt out of the packaging in which the punching bag came with. Hang a hook from the eye bolt down to where the bag will hang. Link the chains from the eye bolt to the bag's chain and swivel. Purchase additional links if the chain isn't long enough.

    • 5

Connect the chain to the punch bag. Purchase a heavy bag ceiling mount from the sporting goods store or from punch bag manufacturers.

    • 6

Drill four bolts or as many as required by the manufacturer's instructions. Insert the eye bolts into the four holes.

    • 7

Link the holes in the steel platform that comes in the packaging of the heavy bag ceiling mount to the eye bolts. Connect the chains to the swivel and then to your punching bag.
