Spinning Vs. Kickboxing
-
Features
-
Spinning classes have a group riding stationary bicycles for a set period of time. You can join a class at the gym, create your own routine, or follow the instructions of a spinning video at home.
Kickboxing is a full body workout where the participant may utilize kicks and punches. This activity can be at a class or at home. The activity can vary by hitting pads, a heavy bag or nothing at all.
Types
-
There are several types of spinning classes available. The most common is a class of several people following the instructions of the teacher. They will have you speed up, slow down and stand while riding during set time increments. Some group classes are devised with themes or feature accompanying music.
The kickboxing classes available are most commonly "cardio kickboxing" and "fight kickboxing." Cardio kickboxing is intended for people who are not interested in technique and just want a high-intensity workout.
Fight kickboxing is slower paced at times as the instructor focuses more on proper fighting technique.
Benefits
-
Spinning and kickboxing both have great physical fitness benefits. They both burn roughly the same amount of calories per hour--300 to 700 depending on body weight--and they are both routinely offered at most major gyms.
If you are looking for more of a lower-body workout then the spinning class might be preferable. However, if more of a full-body, high-impact workout is your goal, then the kickboxing class might be best suited for you.
Warning
-
When starting any new workout routine, it is important to consult your doctor. Be aware of the health risks involved and your own physical fitness level. Start gradually, drink plenty of water throughout your workout, and do not be afraid to take breaks when necessary.
Considerations
-
Always get to know the instructor of your workout class. A good or bad instructor can mean the difference between a good workout and a bad workout. Also, make sure to review costs, times and lengths of the workout routines available. Finally, sit in on a class to help you decide which type is best for you.
