What Is Stott Pilates?

There are several variations to the exercise program bearing Joseph Pilates name. One of them is called Stott Pilates. The company, which bears the same name, is a subsidiary of the Merrithew Corporation. As of 2009, 21,000 people have been trained in the Stott method. They have numerous training sites around the world.

    • The Stott Pilates method was created by Moira and Lindsay G. Merrithew along with physical therapists and experts in sports medicine in the late 1980s.

    Similarities to Other Pilates Programs

    • The foundation of any Pilates program is strengthening core muscles. All Pilates programs also focus on breathing techniques, balance, strength, flexibility, body awareness and posture.

    Differences from Other Pilates Programs

    • Stott Pilates focuses on spinal rehabilitation and improved athletic performance. Stott Pilates also claims to have more modified exercises to accommodate people of every ability.

    Equipment

    • Stott Pilates uses the Pilates Reformer, a mat, resistance bands and tubes, fitness circles and toning balls depending on which class or DVD with which you are working.

    Training

    • Stott Pilates has three corporate training centers. They also have more than 50 licensed training centers, and they have global hosting locations where they train instructors as well.

    • Stott Pilates also offers a wide range of DVDs for use in the privacy of your home.
