1
Be cautious about running and over-exerting yourself if you are prone to shoulder stitches. Running and exercising causes shoulder stitches more frequently in younger athletes, studies suggest. As muscle and bone grow and change they are more susceptible to phantom pains, such as shoulder stitches.

2
Eat only carefully before running. Eating prior to running can be a major cause of shoulder stitches as well. While it’s important to eat prior to running for energy, doctors suggest you avoid eating chocolate, apples, bananas and fatty foods. Hopefully, this will reduce the shoulder pain.

3
Reduce the intensity of your workout if shoulder stitches persist. Studies show that a vigorous workout causes a buildup of lactic acids in the shoulder and also causes stress to ligaments. This combination can be blamed for a great deal of shoulder stitches suffered by runners.

4
Stretch your arms and shoulders prior to running to avoid shoulder stitch pain. Shoulder rotations and generally providing stress and flexibility to shoulder muscles will help warm up muscles and ligaments normally associated with shoulder stitches.
-
5
Practice breathing techniques while running to avoid shoulder pain. Taking deep breaths, grunting while exhaling and holding your breath are all techniques some experts suggest in order to get rid of pesky shoulder stitches.
