How to Volunteer at a Water Stop

1
Dress appropriately. If you don't want to get wet, don a raincoat or lovely trash bag. It's unlikely you will get soaked, but if it's cold outside you won't want even a damp sleeve. Remember that despite the sporty atmosphere, you won't be breaking a sweat. Bundle up accordingly. If it's cold, you'll need waterproof gloves.
-
2
If your area has both water and a sports drink, shout out what you're giving away. And if you are shouting "Gatorade!" make sure you aren't handing out Powerade. Some runners can only tolerate one brand.
-
3
When a pack of runners approaches, stand steady with your arm extended. Hold the cup by the bottom so a runner can easily grab it from your hand.
-
4
Have somebody refilling cups behind you so there is always plenty to hand out.
-
5
Cheer for everyone. Some popular phrases: "Good job!" or "Looking strong!" or "Way to go!" Not-so-favorites include: "Hang in there!" (What, do I look like I'm dying?) and "You're almost there" (Unless I can see the finish line, I'm not almost there).
-
6
If the race is crowded, it's especially important to have volunteers sweeping up the discarded cups. This keeps things safe and less slippery.
-
7
Dress up in a crazy outfit because who doesn't love a funny hat? Costumes and sideline shenanigans are welcome distractions for the runners. Better yet, create an entire theme for your water stop. Add music and you'll see the runners pass by with grins and an extra bounce in their step.
