How to Run a Mile in a Gymnasium

Running laps in a gym is a great alternative when the weather is bad or if you're a beginning runner who struggles when running on rough terrain outside. A gym gives you a perfect opportunity to train your body for more difficult landscapes and to avoid anything adverse about running outside. Gyms come in different sizes, so determining how many laps you need to run to reach a mile is critical.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine if you are on a high school or professional-sized court. Both high school and collegiate courts are high-school sized. High-school courts are 84 feet long and 50 feet wide. Professional courts are 10 feet longer.

    • 2

Use the formula (2 x length) + (2 x width) = N and then 5,280/N to figure out how many laps you must run to total a mile.

    • 3

Run the number of laps you obtained from the equation by following the outside lines of the court. For example, a high-school sized gym would require you to run 20 laps to equal 1 mile.
