How to Count Jumps in a Cycle

Jump cycles are a part of intermediate and advanced spin workout routines. In addition to pedaling vigorously, spin class participants use their arms to build momentum and "jump" to their feet, going even faster while standing up in the pedals. Keeping time with the music or the class instructor's directions can help riders keep their places in the cycle.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit up on the spin bike while pedaling, with your back straight up and your arms down by your thighs. This builds your core by forcing you to balance while your arms aren't on the handlebars.

    • 2

Swing your arms up and back, but not out, as you count "one" in time with the music, or as your spin class instructor counts "one." Bring them down and then up in front of you as you count "two." Swing your arms down and back again as you count "three." You are building momentum for your jump.

    • 3

Jump as you count “four.” Your arms should be on the way up in front of you as you jump up toward the handle-bars. Keep your feet steady and pedal while you stand up. Try not to grab the handle-bars until you are already standing up, because the purpose of this is to build your core through balance.
