How to Find What Wheels Will Work on My Trike

A tricycle's wheels have a short life expectancy, due to the wear and tear they must go through in order to satisfy a young child's need for speed. Tricycle wheels come in two main types: solid metal wheels and more conventional spoked bicycle wheels. Once you remove the tricycle's wheels, it is a relatively simple task to select wheels to replace them, as long as you make sure to carefully select wheels that are nearly identical to the ones you are replacing.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the wheels from the tricycle. If the tricycle has solid metal wheels, loosen the wheel attachment bolts and slide the wheel from the frame's forked tips. If the tricycle has spoked wheels, loosen the quick release lever and unscrew it until you can remove the wheel's hub from the frame's forked tips.

Measure the diameter of the wheel, using a tape measure. Also measure the width of the tread and the wheel's hub. Write down the dimensions on a piece of scrap paper.

Go to a bicycle or athletic store that carries tricycles and tricycle supplies. Look around the store for a wheel that matches the one you removed from the tricycle. Choose a wheel that is the same style as the wheel you removed from the tricycle (for instance, if you removed a metal wheel from the tricycle, do not purchase a spoked wheel to replace it).

Select a wheel that has the same dimensions as the wheel you removed from the tricycle. This helps you make sure to purchase a wheel that will easily fit into the tricycle's frame.
