Monitor Your Heart Rate While Spinning
-
1
Choose a heart rate monitor that is both easy to use and reliable. Many Spinning classes offer bicycles that are already equipped with heart rate monitors, so check in advance. Check out websites such as Spinning.com for information on heart rate monitors specially designed for Spinning (see Resources below).
-
2
Consult with your doctor about minimum and maximum heart rate ranges that fall into a healthy category for your body type. Discuss this range with your Spinning instructor if it falls outside of the normal range. This way, you won't be pushed too hard during the Spinning course.
-
3
Learn how to adjust the resistance on your bicycle so that your heart rate corresponds with the effectiveness of the workout. For instance, a proper heart rate of 180 is the maximum for a person in their twenties, while a person in their fifties should not exceed a heart rate of 150.
-
4
Make sure your heart rate drops to proper levels during "recovery" intervals, where the resistance of the bicycle is lowered to allow the body to rest in between sprints. For example, a person in their twenties should allow their heart rate to drop to at least 125 before increasing the resistance on their bicycle, while a person in their fifties should allow their heart rate to drop to at least 105 beats per minute.
