How to Train to Become Faster

For nearly every sport, increasing a player's speed increases his or her value. Speed, of course, may refer to any number of objectives: the ability to perform at a quick pace through an entire event, or simply the ability to move as quickly as possible for a short period of time. For each of these purposes there are a number of exercises and improvements which may prove crucial in building and maintaining speed. Follow these steps to help yourself become faster.

Instructions

    • 1

Evaluate your goals and discuss them with a physician to ensure you won't put yourself at undo risk.

    • 2

Prepare a workout schedule that includes both running and lifting - allow for recovery days. Lifting helps build muscles which propel your body faster, while rest allows muscles to rebuild themselves.

    • 3

Mix a blend of distance running with speed training, such as sprints. You'll simultaneously build endurance and train your muscles for quicker movement.

    • 4

Stretch before and after each run. In "Top Ten Ways to Run Faster," Rick Morris explains that "a tight muscle is a slow functioning muscle."

    • 5

Increase your stride. As the length of each stride brings you further, you'll find yourself growing faster.
