Supplements for MMA Training

MMA, or mixed martial arts, is exactly what it sounds like, a mixture of different fighting styles and martial arts. MMA has gained popularity partly because of the wide variety of training techniques and fighting styles. When competing in an MMA fight, the competitor may utilize boxing, wrestling, jujitsu and many other fighting skill sets. If you are training for MMA, it is important that you fuel your body to maintain energy and build muscle mass.
  1. Creatine

    • Creatine is a substance that bodies make naturally. Creatine helps supply energy to cells and muscles. It helps to increase ATP production, which in turn is broken down into energy. By adding a creatine supplement to protein shakes or other drinks, ATP levels are increased in muscle cells, which will in turn increase stamina and strength.

    Protein Powder

    • Proteins are the key ingredient to building muscle. During MMA training, you will build muscle to increase strength. Instead of eating chicken breast all day long, consider purchasing a protein powder that you can make into shakes for on-the-go replenishment. Whey, soy and other protein powders all boast that they are the best for muscle building but look at how many grams of protein each provides per serving. Also pay attention to the sugars and carbohydrates in each serving and aim for protein powder that is low in sugar and carbohydrates.

    Vitamins and Minerals

    • During MMA training, you are burning a large amount of calories and lifting heavy weights. When you sweat, you lose electrolytes, and when you lift weights, your muscles tear. Gaining muscle is a result of your body's healing process of the small tears created when working out. To replenish electrolytes and aid your body in quick recovery, it is important that you are ingesting enough vitamins and minerals. Take an over-the-counter multi-vitamin/multi-mineral that is made with natural ingredients every day.

    Thermogenics

    • Thermogenics are a class of supplements that claim to increase your metabolism, burn more fat and give you increased energy for whatever activities you need it for. While thermogenics definitely increase energy levels, most do this through high levels of caffeine and other blends of chemicals that cause a spike in your energy levels. Most thermogenic supplements are not regulated by the FDA so before taking them make sure you research the proprietary blend of chemicals in each supplement and make sure they are not linked to heart attacks or other dangers to your body.
