Speed Training With Bands

Traditional weights are meant for training in a vertical motion, and they can obstruct the natural motion of the body. For speed training, bands are better both functionally and practically.
  1. Identification

    • Speed training with bands involves either running with a band attached for added resistance or using a band to train muscles that are specific to increasing speed and cannot be trained with traditional weights. One such muscle is the hip flexor.

    Benefits

    • Bands allow you to train in a horizontal plane as well as a vertical one. Traditional weights are meant for training vertically. Because running is a horizontal motion, bands are best suited for this type of training.

    Training Examples

    • Running with a band around your waist is one way to build strength for speed. An example of a speed strengthening exercise is the side step, performed with the band around your thigh. Bending your knee slightly, step to the side, and slowly bring the other leg behind. Repeat an equal number of times with each leg as the lead.
