How to Do Handstand Pushups With Knees on a Box

Gymnasts and CrossFit junkies alike work hard to master handstand pushups. While just doing a handstand is an impressive feat, doing a pushup in the handstand position is a remarkable demonstration of strength. Handstand pushups, known by CrossFit fans as HSPUs, aren't the kind of exercise most people can do right off the bat. According to CrossFit London, once you've mastered regular pushups and can maintain a freestanding handstand for 60 seconds, you can move on to handstand pushups with your knees on a box.

Instructions

    • 1

Push the box against the wall and kneel on it. Place the balls of your feet against the wall. Use a sturdy wooden box that allows you to reach the ground comfortably, or an aerobics step with enough risers underneath to create the proper height.

    • 2

Place the palms of your hands on the floor, slightly more than shoulder-width apart and as close to the box as possible. The farther out you walk your hands, the easier the move will be.

    • 3

Bend your elbows to 90 degrees and lower your head until it almost touches the floor. Bring your forehead just in front of your hands, controlling the movement on the way down.

    • 4

Press back up to starting position, with your arms locked as they would be in headstand.

    • 5

Repeat the motion until you work up to three sets of 10 repetitions, resting for at least one minute between sets.
