Steam Room Maintenance

Steam rooms are rooms heated with a steam generator. These rooms are usually outfitted with tile and have different levels to sit on. To maintain these rooms, keep them clean by removing excess water.
  1. Cleaning the Room

    • A steam room is an ideal place for bacteria to breeding ground as it's small, has low light and is constantly wet and high in humidity. Regular maintenance of a steam room requires washing it out thoroughly with a hose and spraying it down with ceramic tile cleaner. Be sure to read the back label of the cleaner before using.

    Drain the Steam Generator

    • Taking care of the steam mechanism also is important for steam room maintenance. Draining the steam generator keeps grime, mold and other bacteria from building up in it. Unless the steam generator hasn't been used for a few months, there is no need to clean it with cleaning products, as the boiling water within the water reservoir kills most of the mold, mildew or bacteria. If mold or mildew has accumulated in the water reservoir, any alkaline solution purchased at a pool or hardware store will do the trick. Be sure to wash this solution out well with cold water once it has been applied and the reservoir has been scrubbed out.

    Repair Cracks

    • Pay attention to the grout and tiles in the steam room, looking for cracks or chips where mold or bacteria can get a foothold. If you find cracks, seal them with a silicon sealant. Keeping cracks sealed consistently and replacing tiles and grout that need to be replaced will help a steam room to last and be functional as long as any room in the house.
