What Are the Treatments for a Torn Muscle in the Arm?

Arm muscles are some of the busiest muscles in the body. However, if the arm muscles are seldom used for heavy work, they can be torn when strained too much.
  1. Ice

    • Ice will reduce the swelling and the pain. However, ice should be applied only during the first two days after the injury.

    Rest

    • Staying away from the activity you were doing when you tore your muscle is very important. However, if the tear is only minor, light stretching or lifting is recommended.

    Compression

    • The arm should be compressed with a bandage or some cloth to reduce swelling. The compression should be tight enough to reduce circulation but not stop it.

    Elevation

    • The arm should be raised to reduce blood flow to that area, which reduces the swelling.

    Medications

    • Medications such as ibuprofen can reduce swelling. If the tear is severe, consult your doctor about stronger treatments.
