1
Stack old phone books to the height you need for your homemade stair stepper. If you are using more than one phone book, securely fasten them together. Tying them together is the easiest way to keep them from slipping. Place your telephone book step on a non-slip mat to keep it from slipping. You should also cover the phone books with a towel to keep the phone book pages from ripping.

Use an old milk crate that can support your weight. Old milk crates or wooden crates work well as long as you are careful when using them. Step directly in the middle of the crate so the crate does not tip over. Place the crate on a non-slip surface to keep it in place.

Employ a footstool as a simple solution for a homemade stair stepper. Using a child's footstool will usually give you the height you need for an effective step workout. If you are using a child's footstool, however, make sure the footstool can support your weight before using it.
