How to Start an Aerobic Step Program

Step aerobics is an aerobic activity usually performed to music on a step, or platform. Stepping routines are done in gym classes, and many DVDs are available for stepping in the comfort of home. Stepping is an enjoyable alternative if you are looking for lower-impact aerobics that provide cardiovascular benefits. It's not difficult to begin a step aerobics program.

Instructions

    • 1

Shop for a platform that has plenty of room for your feet. The height should be adjustable so you can increase the intensity after you've been stepping for several weeks. If possible, practice stepping up on the platform before making the purchase.

    • 2

Shop around for a video if you want to work out at home with a DVD. Check whether the techniques on a video are beginning, intermediate or advanced. Usually the level of impact (low or high) is indicated. Check the beats per minute (BPM); routines should not go over 128 BPM, according to the American Council on Fitness. Faster routines pose a risk of injury.

    • 3

Start smart. Beginners should start any stepping routine with the step at its lowest height, which is typically 4 inches. Gradually increase step height as you become accustomed to your routine.

    • 4

Stand up straight. Align your body, and don't arch your back. Keep your knees loose rather than locking them. Leaning should be done "from the ankles, not the waist," states acefitness.org. Your knees should never bend more than 90 degrees.

    • 5

Step firmly, with the entire foot landing on the platform. Step down close to the platform, flat-footed. You should, however, land on the ball of the foot when you're performing lunges or other movements that are repeated rapidly, according to acefitness.org.

Give yourself room if stepping at home. You will need approximately 3 or 4 feet around the platform for most routines.
