How to Test My Range of Motion

A range of motion test allows you to determine how far you can move a particular joint, from its "flexed" position to its outer reaches. This distance is measured degrees. To perform a range of motion test on a joint, you'll need what's called a medical goniometer. This device measures angles and is often used by doctors and physical therapists for range of motion tests.

Instructions

    • 1

Align the center of the joint you'd like to test directly below the medical goniometer.

    • 2

Move the arm of the goniometer so that it rests along the limb of the joint you're testing.

    • 3

Stretch out the limb attached to the joint you're testing while keeping the arm of the goniometer flush against that limb. If you were measuring your elbow, you'd stretch your arm all the way out. Make note of the angle on the goniometer.

    • 4

Flex that same limb. For instance, if you were testing your elbow, you'd bend your elbow back so your forearm would be touching your bicep. Check the angle on the goniometer.

Take the "flexed" angle measurement and subtract it from the "fully stretched out" angle measurement. The result is the measurement of that joint's range of motion, in degrees.
